Google Desktop is a set of tools that allows you to search in Google faster, and also adds useful gadgets to your desktop. The program has a prominent and useful sidebar, which is divided into resizable and variously configurable modules . The default gadgets are a Gmail window, a news ticker, a "stickynote" , a gallery of files in the user's Pictures folder, an RSS feed window, a weather applet, a To Do list, and a Google search bar. The application also allows developers to create their own gadgets for people. As regards searching, Google integrates fast drive search with Web search, both in the window that opens in response to double-clicking the Google Desktop icon, and also with a floating deskbar which can be added optionally for remote searching. The installation is very simple and quick, and supports Windows 2000 SP3, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. Like other indexed search systems, Google Desktop takes some time to index all the files on the user's computer. By default, it only indexes when the computer is idle, much like other search programs such as Windows Desktop Search. |
